Brussels before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Hussein Habré
AMSTERDAM - Belgium has asked the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague to compel Senegal to try former Chadian President Hussein Habré for crimes against humanity.

 

The complaint also claims the Belgian international court that it requires the Senegalese authorities to put Hussein Habré under judicial supervision and ensure that it will not attempt to leave the country, where he was exiled.

In general, the review of complaints by the ICJ last several years, but an applicant may file "an application for provisional measures, a procedure that allows a judge to rule before the court makes a ruling on the final substance.

Brussels wants, in this context, the ICJ sum Dakar to take "all measures within its power to ensure that Habré remains under the control and supervision of judicial authorities of Senegal to the rules of international law including Belgium calls for respect can be properly applied. "

Hussein Habré, who ruled Chad from 1982 to 1990 and lived in exile since then in Senegal, is accused of torturing and murdering opponents. The first charges for complicity in crimes against humanity, torture and barbarism to the date back to 2000.

Several complaints have been filed in court by Belgians Belgian origin or Chadian But Senegal has excluded that’Habré be tried in Belgium and in 2005 formally rejected an extradition request made by Brussels.
